At Purdue University we have been exploring the possibilities opened up by the 2D code revolution. My colleagues keep asking me about the digital matrix I affixed to the main office door. One of my classes has created a 2d code tour of the campus trees. The Visible Past project has generated codes that once affixed to a historical location can deliver to a cell phone information from http://visiblepast.net about that place .
2D codes are dot matrices that store information by presence or absence of dark spaces. They are just like bar codes, with the difference that information is stored both on the horizontal and on the vertical.
2d codes can be created online, from sites such as i-nigma. I-nigma also supports a number of cell phone clients that intermediate the communication between cell phones, online resources and physical locations. 2D Code News offers a large collection of 2d code making software and cell phone readers.
Now, think of bar codes attached to just anything in sight that connect to Google searches!
What’s going to be next? We are not ready to share that yet, but we are working on it!
