Gwiki technologies making headway

When we launched Visible Past a few years ago, there was very low interest in geographic wiki applications. Geo wikis are editable sites that interact with mapping services. (For details, see the Read Write Web covergage of our Visible Past Virtual Omaha project). Since then, a new generation of geo wikis has been emerging. A new Mediawiki geowiki fork was recently announced by the Gratz Technical University collective lead by Dr. Kappe. The project is spearheaded by Christian Safran. Their TUGeoWiki, in alpha, can be found at: http://media.iicm.tugraz.at/geowiki/index.php/Hauptseite.  A description of the concept was provided in our own paper “Where information searches for you”  (Matei, Wernert, Faas), posted on Scribd.

Also, when you have a minute, check out our own gWiki app on the Iphone.

A recent paper on the work done by our colleagues in Graz can be found on Scribd:
