Expanding Access
As an avid public-radio fan, (I embrace what others consider my “nerdness”) I’ve recently been exploring the world of podcasts since I don’t own a radio in my house and stopped driving my car (current modes of transportation: feet, trolley, bus, and sliding on ice). Beyond the freebies offered at NPR, I just got introduced to PRX (public radio exchange) set up, in part, by one of my friend’s sons. With lots of stories about the homogeneity of radio stations and monopolies of big companies, PRX’s goal to provide access to diverse content is intriguing. They provide podcasts to me the consumer – but their primary audience is other radio stations – creating a space to share their work.
I’m planning to sign up for their RSS feed. This week something about “Dinner at the Blind Cow”. They have stuff from the Dutch, the Swiss… and lots of different companies – making public radio a more global phenomenon – not simply an American perspective on it. It will go nicely with my BBC and CBC feeds.
