Readable Laws

Legalese for dummies. One law at a time.

Help:About this project – Readable Laws
When was the last time you tried to read a law? The actual, raw text of a piece of legislation? If you dont know where to find such a thing, try this one. Its the Patriot Act. Try reading it, and youll soon understand what this site is about.

Congress passes over 200 new laws every year. They propose a few thousand. And almost nobody reads them–not even the senators and representatives who vote on them. Why? Because, as you can see from the above link, many bills are hundreds of pages long and are filled with complex language that few people can understand. They make repeated references to the US Code, so readers have to keep referring to a document that is tens of thousands of pages long, and is also filled with complex language.

Reading just one bill is beyond the means of a normal human. Nobody can do it alone. So were here to do it together.
