How do you convert a MediaWiki xml dump (using Special:Export) into a human readable file? First, I expected to find a simple, Microsoft Word import filter. What I initially found, namely Wandora, was interesting enough, but it only gave me repeated headaches, since the navigation and controls do not provide any reasonable feedback to tell you what is going on. Yet, the program is promising and deserves to be kept under monitoring.
The solution I made to work, although for a fee, is DownCast, provided by Infinity loop. Not perfectly, the resulting file is still rather mangled, but it works. A commercial, one user license, is 100 euro (over 150 dollars).

downCast converts XML documents valid according to the upCast DTD (and, in fact, any XML document whose DTD can be mapped into the upCast DTD) linked with an external stylesheet to Word and Rich Text Format (RTF) for editing and printing. Combine it with upCast, and you have a combo that offers a unique, streamlined, roundtrip-capable and integrated XML editing and publishing solution based – among others – on the open standards XML, XLink, XSLT and CSS2.
