Trade off as a way of thinking: An interdisciplinary undergraduate course and learning experience in technology / STEM education at Purdue Polytechnic

In Spring 2015, together with my colleagues, Michael Smith, Abrar Hammoud, and Davin Huston I developed a multidisciplinary learning experience whose main goal is to help students acquire competencies related to problem formulation, design thinking, ethical and critical thinking, advanced persuasive speaking, and deep reading. Creativity doubled by rigorous research are also a part of the process.
The course serves technology students within Purdue’s competency-baed education Transdisciplinary Studies Program. The program is part of the Purdue Polytechnic and is a major attempt to reconsider the manner and goals for undergraduate teaching education in STEM. The course was also inspired by my collaboration with Fatma Mili in the Transform Stem Program (http://transformstem.org)
The course focuses on a series of projects that train the students to become problem solvers and complex storytellers. Thus, the course has two goals, one substantive and the other methodological.
